The book isn’t autobiographical, but draws on Larue’s own experiences in restaurants: He worked as a dishwasher in the early 2000s, and while he left the dish pit behind long ago, he’s still in the industry, as an owner of Mile End bar La Taverne du Pélican. ![]() The Dishwasher centres some dark themes like alcoholism and drug use in the kitchen, drawing inevitable comparisons to Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential. With a strong sense of realism, the book - renamed The Dishwasher for its English release - details the at time overwhelming life of the restaurant in formidable detail as the chaotic winter holiday season approaches. After digging himself into a financial hole with an online gambling habit, the main character (also the book’s narrator) takes a job washing dishes at a high-end restaurant. Written by Longueuil native-turned-Montrealer Stéphane Larue, published in French in 2016, and now translated by Pablo Strauss, it’s a coming of age story of a dishwasher on the cusp of his 20s, living and working on the Plateau in 2002. Award-winning Québécois novel Le Plongeur is now available in an English translation. ![]() ![]() ![]() Inspired by Emile Zola’s short story Les Repoussoirs, this debut novel takes place during the late 1800s. It is full of strong female characters driven by the pursuit of their dreams rather than pursuit of a husband, thus defying their societal roles. But as the lines of friendship are blurred by her responsibilities, what will Maude choose? Should she stay true to her friend at the expense of her career or continue to be the mother’s puppet, potentially sacrificing Isabel’s happiness? This is a compelling story about friendship, the complexity of beauty, and self-discovery. Maude’s first client is a challenge: a headstrong young woman named Isabel, who is unaware that Maude has been hired by her mother to act as Isabel’s beauty foil. To get by, she takes a job as a repoussoir, a young woman hired for her ugliness and used to highlight the beauty of her patroness. ![]() ![]() ![]() Maude Pichon, a runaway, discovers life in Paris to be crueler and much less romantic than she imagined from her country home in provincial Brittany. ![]() ![]() ![]() As well, there are brief appearances made by Diana Barry, the Reverend Mr. Other Avonlea residents from the Anne series are also referenced in passing, including Marilla Cuthbert and Mrs. She is otherwise only briefly mentioned in passing in five other stories: "Each in His Own Tongue", '"Little Joscelyn"', "The Winning of Lucinda", '"Quarantine at Alexander Abraham's" and "The End of a Quarrel". Thalia and Sorin, Evren's besties, take great care of Adara, and it's impossible not to fall in love with them while they do. While Evren's away, I enjoyed seeing Adara try to learn more about herself and the Starblessed and watching her train to fight and use her newfound magic. Thankfully, the author doesn't make us suffer for long, and this is not one of those stories where the hero is gone for the entire damn book. That being said, it does happen often in second books of fantasy series, so when it occurred, I was scared I was in for a near Evren free read. What I wasn’t prepared for was Evren leaving her in his kingdom so soon after they arrived. She's angry and doesn't want the bond she shares with Evren.or at least, she keeps saying that. ![]() I was ready for Adara to be epically pissed off after the betrayal that's discovered at end of the first installment, and I wasn't disappointed there. Now that I've read it, I'm like a fiend waiting for my next hit already! I adore Evren and Adara so much. A Kingdom of Stars and Shadows is one of my favorite books of this year, so I've been practically salivating waiting for A Kingdom of Blood and Betrayal to land on my Kindle. ![]() ![]() Each minute thread of plot is tied to another to weave an entire tapestry of America, and every story builds on and enhances the next. ![]() ![]() Gradually, these three versions of America, which once seemed separate, begin to interconnect with one another the setting of the townhouse in Washington Square Park appears in all three stories the character’s names are recycled in each story, almost as if they were being reincarnated a decade apart from each other.
